Kicking off the 2018 season, the Cougars had high expectations for the squad, which included Roy being named on the watchlist for the Ray Guy award, honouring the nation’s best Collegiate Punter.
“This is a very talented team; this is one of the best teams I’ve played with.”
In the words of Roy himself, he felt this was the best opportunity the Houston Cougars had to truly compete for a title during his time there, with other key players such as d’Eriq King and Ed Oliver also included on award watch lists.
The Cougars flew out to a hot start, winning six of their first seven games – including the famous “Bayou Bucket” over Rice University – before facing their toughest test yet.
The best win of the season – a 57-36 win over a ranked USF squad – had fans and media alike believing that this Houston team could go all the way to one of the more prestigious NCAA Bowl games.
“Maybe this Houston team can play… Everyone’s talking about us making the New Year’s Six Bowl game.”
Roy goes on to describe the rest of the season as it all unravels – the ups and downs of a college football team and the drastic repercussions when the team doesn’t perform to expected standards.
“Everyone on the football staff was fired. From Design to Admin to video. Crazy.”
