Former University of Houston punter shares his journey from Australian ice cream salesman to Ray Guy Award finalist.

Sportscaster Media has announced the upcoming debut of a brand new podcast series featuring Dane Roy, the Australian football player who went from selling ice cream to punting at the University of Houston.

At 26 years old, Roy was working at Peter’s Ice Cream in Melbourne, Australia, when he stumbled upon the opportunity to participate in a “longest kick” contest, ending in a final showdown at the 2015 Australian Football League Grand Final. Roy won the final contest with an 81-yard (73-meters) punt that would ultimately change his life.

As part of his prize, he earned a chance to work with renowned punting coach Nathan Chapman of Prokick Australia, and when Tom Herman – then head coach at the University of Houston – came calling for a punter, Chapman didn’t hesitate to recommend the booming boot of Dane Roy.

Roy arrived at UH in 2016, punting for the Cougars through 2019. In his senior year alone, Roy punted for a total of 2,531 yards with a 46.9 yard average – a single season record at UH – earning himself multiple special teams honors and a Ray Guy Award nomination.

Sportscaster Media is bringing Roy’s incredible story to audiences through a new podcast series “Taking A Punt” that will be launching soon across all major platforms.
